In these days of instant anything, quick response,
quick returns, the motto is get the best result
for the least effort. We carry that notion over
into the discipline of being a Christian. Paul
“pressed on toward the goal to win the prize”.
The story of the hare and the tortoise is familiar.
“I can easily win” thinks the hare as he bounds
off and then rests up, falling asleep in the bush.
Along plods the tortoise, slowly, one leg after the
other, but moving on surely until he crosses the
finish line to win the prize!
By steady effort, day by day, week by week, in
prayer, in reading and meditating on God’s Word,
in disciplined Christian living – we will arrive. The
goal? “To know Christ and the power of his
resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his
sufferings, becoming like him ...” (Phil. 3:10 NIV).
